The Room Engine system comes packaged in a self-extracting EXE installer, it does most of the hard work for you!

Requirements

  • .NET Framework 2.0 (for the Configuration tool)
  • Visual Basic 6 Runtime
  • Windows NT/2000/XP and above for the iPhone WebApp Server
You may also need to install the Speech API components, but only if speech recognition doesn't work. For all systems I've tried, it appears to work by default.

Method

First of all, download the Room Engine V1.0 ZIP file. Double click the ZIP file (you may need to extract), you will see 4 files.

Run the RoomEngineSetup.exe file. You may be asked about whether you would like to extract the file, it's fine not to, you can select run. You will see a progress bar while the installer extracts the required files to a temporary directory. The installer script will then run, and install the system for you.

When installation is complete, run the RENetFix.exe file from the ZIP archive. This executable will install and register MSWINSCK.OCX correctly, so that the Speech Interface and Room Engine Server can function correctly. The Visual Basic Runtime does not include this file, so it is very important it is installed using this utility.

You should now see some new icons on your desktop!

Run RESettingsConfig, you should be presented with the following window. Check the COM port setting corresponds to the port the Control Board is connected to.

Switch to the users tab, and click 'Add New User'. Enter a username and password, then hit Add. You should now be ready to go!

See the iPhone WebApp page for instructions on setting up the Room Engine system with your iPhone.

You should now be able to use the Speech Interface component. You can change parameters related to speech recognition from the iPhone WebApp. Note: To vastly improve the speech recognition accuracy, you must train it by going to Speech in Control Panel. Note: Windows 7 seems to prompt you to train the Windows Speech system anyway when you run the Speech Interface.
